The General Public and the Media

After doing our group presentations last week, I noticed that most everybody in the class did not necessarily agree with the majority of what the news networks showed. It came up to my mind, why does the general public in the United States not stand up to what these news networks show on the news the majority of the time, if not always? I believe that if anything is to change, it is up to the majority and if we keep being "ignorant," then these news networks are going to keep feeding us what really is not actually important.

  1. I completely agree with you, however I think people are lazy and will take the spoonfed babble over the cold hard truth any day. To me it is a matter of someone or something taking the initiative to get the snowball rolling, so to speak, and get enough attention so that it gets noticed. Once it has gained enough attention people need to start not watching the mindless babble and start getting serious about themselves and the world they live in. Mindless babble is ok, but not ok when every station is playing it. What we need is a more educated public that can see through the babble and take the initiative to make things how they should be.

  2. I also agree with both of you guys. I think the media is conspiring to keep us "ignorant" but I don't necessarily discard the fact that they are pretty much showing us what we want. A lot of people like to watch pointless shows over educated ones. The question is...Is it really our own choice to choose those shows??? or Is it that we choose to watch or listen to pointless things because the media puts them out there for reason? Well, maybe the media puts them for us to fall right into choosing them.

  3. In my opinion, it is our choice to choose those shows that essentially throw meaningless garbage at us. We pick the garbage over the truth because it is much easier to swallow. If every station showed the real news and only 1 showed issues that are essentially irrelevant, then I believe that most people would watch the irrelevant issue station. I think that TV is one of the few ways people can get away from reality, and that is why more reality being thrown at them is not the most fun subject to tune in to.
